The NMM Economic Impact Assessment will draw upon data from the online survey (Phase 1) to generate credible estimates of the impact of Manitoba’s new media industry on Manitoba’s GDP, wage income, employment, exports and inward investment, and tax revenues (provincial and federal).
A robust and reliable data set is critical to generating the Economic Impact Assessment, and it is for this reason that your completing the NMMcensus online survey is so crucially important.
The overall economic impact of an industry, including the new media industry, can be characterized in terms of three types of economic impacts: direct, spin-off (indirect + induced) and spillover effects.
The direct impact refers to the increase in GDP and employment within the new media industry.
The spin-off impact represents the sum of the indirect and induced impacts. The indirect impact refers to the increase in GDP and employment in the industries that supply inputs to the new media industry. The telecommunications industry and its supply of broadband internet services would be one example of industry that supplies a key input to the new media industry. The induced impact refers to the additional economic activity due to the re-spending of incremental household income in the Manitoba economy.
The spill-over effects capture the economic benefits that downstream users and other businesses capture due to their use of IDM products or services, or access to the knowledge or human capital developed by IDM companies. For a knowledge-based industry such as the IDM industry, economic spill-overs can be substantial.
Your tremendous support has resulted in a very encouraging survey response rate to date, and we anticipate the momentum to continue throughout the online survey process.
Nordicity has pioneered the taxonomy for the digital media industry, as used in the Canadian Interactive Industry Profile 2008, and paved the way for its adoption by industry and governments that understand the new media sector. Nordicity’s authoritative economic models for the new media, film, television and music industries are highly respected and trusted by government finance and statistics departments.
The combination of reliable data and trusted methods of analysis reinforce the level of strength and authority to be expected from the NMM Economic Impact Assessment.
