Designing Great Apps

In his previous life as a professional wrestler, Phil (the Hit Man) Letourneau defeated his opponents with signature moves like the Crème Brûlée, the French Press, and the Poutine Maker.

Next Tuesday, he trades his wrestling trunks for tips, on how to become a User Interface Designer of mobile applications - and nobody will get hurt.

Phil's background in user interface design began years ago when he watched with horror how mobile manufacturers crammed computer operating systems into mobile devices that were 1/6 the size of their desktop counterparts. Since that time, Phil has spent countless hours designing his own apps as well as apps for others with a keen focus toward a simplified mobile experience that doesn't sacrifice great design.

On Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 7 pm, on 1000 Waverley Street, Phil will share some of his key tips for designing mobile apps, including:

  • How mobile platforms like iPhone and iPad have unique design considerations
  • How to brainstorm and refine a product that will be appropriate for a mobile device
  • The importance of design iteration toward user experience
  • How to design and refine mobile mockups
  • The importance of iconography
  • Detail work and polish
  • The above will be covered within the context of a case study and real world examples.

Tuesday night's presentation is targeted toward anyone who wants to learn more about mobile app design and the nuances of the user experience. Programmers will gain an appreciation for how a designer thinks about app design and designers will learn practical tips to prepare for designing mobile apps. Regular folk will learn about the product design process and how an app is conceived and brought to life.

Phil Letourneau is the Director of Visual Design at Black Pixel. He designs interfaces and user experiences for Macintosh, iOS, and web applications.
