Hands-on Intermediate Photography Workshop
Do you have the basics of photography down, but feel frustrated by some technical issues or compositional tricks?
On Sunday, March 18, 2012, get hands-on experience to help bring your photos to the next level. This workshop will be led by commercial photographer Ian McCausland and international wedding photographer Nghia Tran, continuing on from the basics introduced in their first photography course for New Media Manitoba one month ago.
This one-day event is meant for users who are familiar with the concepts of composition, lighting, and workflow but are unfamiliar with best practices. Participants that have attended the introductory course will have the bacground required for this course.
Please bring your own DSLR camera. There will be one or two on hand should you require.
The topics to be covered:
- Review of the basics of exposure
- Compositional critique
- Still life and portrait techniques
- Off camera lighting explained
- Post processing software compared and explained
- Back strategies
- Output of files and options for printing
The emphasis in this second course is to take the basics of photogrpahy and apply it to the "real world" to determine what specific areas participants require help. You are asked to bring images for constructive critique provided by Ian and Nghia.
There will be a couple of setups to photograph in the classroom, giving participants an opportunity to create photographs with instructors on hand to lend guidance. Once completed, you will be guided to our Certified Apple Lab just down the hall where information and advantages of processing RAWS will be shared, as well as an overview of RAW workflow and outputs.
Criteria for images to be brought in by participants:
You can bring existing images or ones shot specifically for this course. Please provide:
- 2-3 images that clearly demonstrate depth field and selective focus
- 2-3 images using shutter speed to convey motion and capture action
- The same subject, portrait, still life, etc, shot with wide and telephoto focal lengths
- A portrait shot indoors, either with or without a flash
- Examples shot from both a birds eye and worms eye view
- Bring your favourite shots, and also bring the shots that didn't turn out so we can trouble shoot the solutions
We will have a couple of work areas available in the classroom including a portrait and still life workstation. Participants will go through each station and then make their way over to the Apple Lab for additional instruction related to processing and working with RAW.
People will walk away with:
- At the end of the day, people will take that basic knowledge of photography they learned in our first course and put it into real world practise.
- They will be informed of the vast level of post processing choices and start to understand workflow options available to them.
