Putting Your Type on the Line
On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, New Media Manitoba presents "Putting your Type on the Line," a creative's guide to fonts on the web.
Fonts and typography on the web can be a complicated, hacky, and limited affair. Most designers and developers are stuck with about four useful fonts out of tens of thousands that are available to print media. BUT, with the advent of new browser technologies, type and typography on the Web is about to change dramatically.
Andrew Boardman, originally from New York, brought his web development business MANOVERBOARD to Winnipeg several years ago. If you attended our IMAX showcase this past December you'll remember Andrew's profile where he describes what it was like developing websites for clients like Barney's New York and former Vice President Al Gore. What impresses me about Andrew is his design sensibility. When you view Andrew's portfolio it's apparent he values a clear, consistent representation of each client's core message. I can go to one of his client's websites and quickly understand why this site is significant and how it will benefit me. This is not an easy achievement. On Tuesday, March 23, Andrew will share with you how he gets his clients' message across using typography and how we can benefit from new rules for fonts online. What are the opportunities? What could go dreadfully wrong? Andrew will emphasize the design and development issues associated with type on the Web and cover topics such as: The Importance of Content Javscript, sIFR, Cufon, and Access CSS and the Beauty of Font Scarcity New Browsers and the @font-face Rule Specialized Web Font Vendors The Importance of Content 2.0 The Danger of the "Funhouse" To see Andrew present is always a treat and that is why we are making this a complimentary training event open to everyone. If you employ any facet of graphic design you will not want to miss this presentation but first you need to register online! Snacks and drinks will be on hand and you'll want to arrive early to find a seat. As always, we will have some interesting giveaways to help make you a new media superstar. :) Kevin
