SUMMARY:Insert Coin Screening and Director's Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Put your quarters up because New Media Manitoba presents a screening of the incredible video game documentary – Insert Coin! \n**Watch the film live now** \nDirector Josh Tsui‘s film Insert Coin chronicles the golden age of coin-up powerhouse Midway Games. Makers of massive hits such as Mortal Kombat\, N.A.R.C and NBA Jam. Midway Games have been described as the Ramones of the video game industry. Louder\, faster and more extreme than anything else out there\, their games were fixtures at every smoke-filled arcade in the ’90s. \n  \n  \nInsert Coin features interviews with the people that brought those games to life\, including Eugene Jarvis\, creator of 80s classic video games such as Defender and Robotron. Jarvis assembled a team at Midway that pioneered the concept of bringing live-action into video games\, which kickstarted a new era. The technology and wild concepts led to their smash hits\, and it wasn’t long before the Midway team conquered the world. What started as a tight-knit group of friends would begin to unravel as they dealt with success and the rise of home consumer technology. \nInsert Coin is the incredible story of the team who changed the video game industry. \nWhen: March 31st – Film Screening 7:00pm* / Director’s Q&A** 8:30pm\nFree to attend \n  \nNow to hit you with a spectacular finishing move – right after the screening\, we have director Josh Tsui joining us to talk about the film! He will have lots to say because\, in addition to directing the film\, he was also part of the development team at Midway back in the ’90s. In true Coin-Op arcade-style\, Josh will be squaring up in this session against hometown hero Jamie Swirsky(Co-director of Indie Game: The Movie)\, who will moderate the discussion. \n \nWow\, this is going to be an exciting and informative evening. We can’t wait to see you. Register soon as capacity is limited. \n  \n  \n*This film screening is available to Manitoba residents only\, and geo-blocking will be in effect – registration is limited.\n**The director’s Q&A is open to all. \n\nDirector’s Bio  \nJoshua Tsui   \nJoshua Tsui spent over two decades working in video game development as a director on key franchises such as Mortal Kombat\, Fight Night\, and Tony Hawk. \nHaving studied film in college\, he accidentally got into games development and put his filmmaking career on hold. Insert Coin brings him back to his roots with a subject he holds dear.

SUMMARY:Girls in Gaming Summer Camp - Virtual Edition
DESCRIPTION:New Media Manitoba’s Girls in Gaming program aims to provide young women a chance to explore the exciting world of game development in a safe and encouraging environment. \nIf you want your child to do more than just play video games all summer then give them the opportunity to learn how to create one with this hands-on camp! \nThis 100% online workshop is sure to inspire students and harness their passion for video games to get them designing their very own. All you need to participate is a computer with a stable internet connection. We will be streaming the lessons each day via our Twitch and Youtube channels. The sessions are all recorded for further review or if something comes up and you can’t attend in person. Lessons are followed up with virtual office hours\, where students can interact and ask questions to our instructor. \nGirls in Gaming is designed from the ground up for young women to spark interest and excitement in STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Math). Game development is the ideal way to explore these STEM topics as it combines fun with hands-on learning\, problem-solving\, and creative planning. Our classes are 100% female-focused\, from instructors to students. We put positive female role models in front of students who create a safe and collaborative space for students to play\, explore\, and be themselves.  \n“Girls’ interest in STEM peaks in middle school and drops off during high school due to social factors and a lack of access.” \n-Girls Who Code \nStudents will be introduced to important video game development concepts including logic\, design\, and basic coding in this one of a kind camp for young women aged 12 to 15. Imaginations flourish as students use art and code to bring their stories to life in their own interactive narrative game. \nOur video game development lessons provide students with the opportunity to: \n\nLearn Twine 2 and how to blend logic\, writing\, images\, and code into a playable story\nDevelop new skills like prototyping\, time management\, and storyboarding\nLearn image manipulation with browser-based tools\nExplore a passion for games in a constructive way\n\nInstructor Bio \n  \nShera Starr is a 2D/3D generalist artist currently freelancing and working on a commercial indie game.\nShera has been making video games since she was 11 and regularly goes to game jams. Shortly after he moved to Canada in 2017\, he worked with a local company (Tactica interactive) developing a 3D video game called Kid Diners for TVOKids. Thanks to the community he was able to contact Daniel Blair\, CEO of the company he is currently working at (Bit Space Development) where he is the Chief Technology Officer working every day with the latest technology available for Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality to build immersive experiences and simulators. Gabriel believes that the best way to give back to the community that first welcomed him is sharing all his knowledge and helping grow its participants though all the events where he can provide guidance\, ideas and always collaborate. “I am a huge fan of collaboration\, and I believe that the greatest projects will always come from a cohesive team that is united by the same idea.” That is why Gabriel wants to bring this Unity Basics and Collaboration course to the community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
