SUMMARY:Introduction to Digital Document Accessibility with Karin Carlson
DESCRIPTION:Nearly one in six Manitobans has a disability\, which creates barriers where they work\, live and play. It is easy to take simple things like accessing a document or form for granted\, but these barriers to accessibility are a real and constant challenge for people with disabilities. Accessible documents and forms required under the Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA)\, so learning how to create them is a crucial skill. \nNew Media Manitoba and TechManitoba are partnering to bring you this important and timely workshop. In this two-day workshop\, participants will learn the process of creating documents that meet provincial accessibility requirements using both Adobe InDesign and Acrobat. \nThe Province of Manitoba is committed to becoming a more inclusive society. The Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) outlines a clear and proactive process to identify and prevent obstacles in critical areas of daily living. This includes removing barriers for accessing information online and with digital documents. \nWith this goal in mind\, it is imperative that we learn how to meet these standards when creating digital documents. It is easy to take viewing a simple document for granted\, but imagine how someone with a visual impairment might be excluded from this potentially critical task. The Province has produced evolving guidelines and best practices around accessibility requirements\, which can be a challenge to implement. This workshop will guide you through the process and let you meet and exceed requirements and create more inclusive experiences in the process. \n Learning Outcomes: \n\nInDesign Techniques For Accessible PDF Files\nImporting from Word\nDocument metadata\nParagraph styles\nMapping Styles to Tags with Export Tagging\nReview the Styles in the InDesign Document\nCreating a Table of Contents to add PDF Bookmarks\nContent on the Master Pages and Artifacts\nAnchoring images\nAdding custom alternative text to images\nUsing Alt text from Bridge\nArtifacting graphic objects\nNumbered and bulleted lists\nUsing the Articles Panel to Adjust Reading Order\nPDF bookmarks\nInteractive hyperlinks and cross-references\nMaking Tables Accessible\nCreating Accessible Forms\nCreate an Accessible PDF file from InDesign with Export\nAdjusting Adobe Acrobat Presets\nColor contrast (text) and use of color\nAnchoring images\n\nRequirements: Participants should have basic computer literacy and understand file system navigation.
