SUMMARY:GameBiz Lab: Working-For-Hire in Video Games: Can you? Should you?
DESCRIPTION:GameBiz Lab is bringing education and consulting around the business side of video games. Join us for our Masterclass series for new and aspiring video game studio owners or anyone interested in the business of video game development. \n\n\n\nGame Development is tough\, and many teams will get to the point where they need to look beyond their initial game project to find some different path to survive. Many consider if ‘Service Work’ is the way to go – taking on game development work from clients in (and out of) the game industry that will pay the bills and keep the lights on. \n\n\n\nFew who venture down this path first consider the implications on their team\, and how they may need to evolve as a business to succeed in this very different end of the business. Noah Decter-Jackson has tread this path – from starting up Complex Games as an indie studio working on its own game\, to pivoting to Work-For-Hire through several very different stages of the game industry\, to pivoting back to independent game development and launching a successful title – Noah has faced the many trials and tribulations of building a successful “Work-for-Hire” game development studio. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Noah will tackle the challenges of Service Work in Game Development\, what you should consider\, and whether or not it’s the path for you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoah Decter-Jackson\n\n\n\nAs Co-Founder\, Studio Head & Game Director of Complex Games Inc. (Manitoba’s first videogame development company)\, Noah has worked to push forward the industry in this province for the past 23 years. After initially bootstrapping a small team with $0 dollars\, he grew Complex into a successful work-for-hire studio employing nearly 50 people. Having also recently seen massive success with the launch of their own game title Noah has had experience with both sides of the business\, and is eager to help demystify how the service industry works. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue

Working on our high-powered gaming laptops they will design their game in a fun and collaborative environment. \nCourse Outline \n\nCreating a posable 2D character\nCharacter rigging\nCreating basic character animations.\nImporting assets into Unity\nProgramming the character\nLevel design\, including how to create an endless runner\nProgramming logic\nHooking up player logic with level logic\nAdding a counter\nCreating a game flow\n\nIf you’re interested in discovering the creative and technical processes behind making video games (or know someone who is) sign up today\, space is extremely limited! \n\n \nInstructor Bio Gabriel Lascano\, an international Computer Engineer with a Master’s Degree in Digital Marketing\, got his Unity 3D Certification in 2017 after a few years of intense video game programming in his home country. Shortly after he moved to Canada in 2017\, he worked with a local company (Tactica interactive) developing a 3D video game called Kid Diners for TVOKids. Thanks to the community he was able to contact Daniel Blair\, CEO of the company he is currently working at (Bit Space Development) where he is the Chief Technology Officer working every day with the latest technology available for Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality to build immersive experiences and simulators. Gabriel believes that the best way to give back to the community that first welcomed him is sharing all his knowledge and helping grow its participants though all the events where he can provide guidance\, ideas and always collaborate. “I am a huge fan of collaboration\, and I believe that the greatest projects will always come from a cohesive team that is united by the same idea.” That is why Gabriel wants to bring this Unity Basics and Collaboration course to the community. \n  \n\n**Health Note** \nDue to COVID-19 we will be taking every possible step to ensure a safe and clean environment. SUMMARY:Girls in Gaming - Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:New Media Manitoba’s Girls in Gaming program aims to provide young women a chance to explore the exciting world of game development in a safe and encouraging environment. \nIf you want your child to do more than just play video games all summer then give them the opportunity to learn how to create one with this hands-on camp! \nRecent school closures and the frequent need to work from home has had a significant impact on parents and students alike. Providing meaningful ways to keep children learning has proven to be a challenge. Generating excitement and maintaining interest is a task few were prepared for. This issue has inspired us to create a fun\, engaging camp experience that inspires students to harness their passion for video games to get them designing their very own. \nGirls in Gaming is designed from the ground up for young women to spark interest and excitement in STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Math). Game development is the ideal way to explore these STEM topics as it combines fun with hands-on learning\, problem-solving\, and creative planning. Our classes are 100% female-focused\, from instructors to students. We put positive female role models in front of students who create a safe and collaborative space for students to play\, explore\, and be themselves.  \n“Girls’ interest in STEM peaks in middle school and drops off during high school due to social factors and a lack of access.” \n-Girls Who Code \nStudents will be introduced to important video game development concepts including logic\, design\, and basic coding in this one of a kind camp for young women aged 12 to 15. Imaginations flourish as students use art and code to bring their stories to life in their own interactive narrative game. \nOur video game development lessons provide students with the opportunity to: \n\nLearn Twine 2 and how to blend logic\, writing\, images\, and code into a playable story\nDevelop new skills like prototyping\, time management\, and storyboarding\nMeet new friends with a similar interest\nExplore a passion for games in a constructive way\n\nInstructor Bio \n\nAmy Gerardy is an illustrator and game developer currently working as a freelance artist. She usually has a variety of projects on the go\, from making prints and books to marketing materials and art assets for games. She’s contributed her art to numerous projects as a frequent game jam participant including several that have grown into larger titles such as Sort the Court and Mirror Mortis. She frequently forgets that her tea is still steeping. \n  \n  \n\n**Health Note** \nDue to COVID-19 we will be taking every possible step to ensure a safe and clean environment. This includes socially distancing all participants\, instructors\, and desks. We will be cleaning all surfaces\, bathrooms\, and door handles multiple times throughout the day.
