GameBiz Lab is bringing education and consulting around the business side of video games. Join us for our next event!
This program helps new and aspiring video game studio owners or anyone interested in the business of video game development.
For the Spring 2026 program, NMM is focused on studio foundations and game ideation. NMM is excited to have Jan Laface lead a session on budgeting for indies.
In this session, we will cover:
What is the current market? Finding data, available tools, and understanding platforms and players
- Costs to consider, including operational costs outside of direct development
- Experience with allocations, specific technology considerations, etc.
- How budgets relate to tracking expenses, project management, CMF, IRAP, and related funding/program structures

Speaker: Jen Laface
Jen Laface is a Producer and Creative Director with experience in operations, budgeting, reporting, and funding applications within the interactive and digital media industry. As co-founder of Only By Midnight, she contributed to multiple successful CMF applications that secured funding for three projects and supported the launch of the studio’s released titles, Curved Space and Ctrl Alt Deal.Jen combines production, operational coordination, and creative leadership with a strong interest in sustainable studio development, funding strategy, and organizational growth. Prior to her work in games, she developed her storytelling background through her years with On Spec Magazine, Canada’s longest-running English-language science fiction and fantasy magazine.Jen currently serves as a board member of Digital Alberta.
